Who are the people most vulnerable to coronavirus?
The world is experiencing an alarm situation. The coronavirus has left the borders of China, and although it has not reached Mexico, experts wonder: who is more vulnerable?
People with obesity or some type of allergy will be the population most affected by the possible arrival in Mexico of the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV), warned the specialist in pediatric infectology, Gerardo López Pérez.
The member of the Mexican Academy of Pediatrics (AMP) pointed out that to prevent the virus from being less aggressive, it will be necessary to attend to the population at risk and apply prevention measures before it reaches Mexican soil. In this way, the immune system will be better prepared to avoid infections .
“We are not overwhelmed by the presence of a virus, we are overwhelmed by the presence of elements that cause that virus to be more aggressive in an individual. If I have a correct immune response, the virus will not do anything to me, "said López Pérez at a press conference.
He indicated that 30 percent of the child population in the country suffers from obesity problems, which makes them more prone to developing respiratory infections, such as the new coronavirus, and, in adult life, metabolic diseases.
He stressed that there is a possibility that the virus will decrease in strength as the winter season ends because, due to cold conditions, people stay longer in closed places. This situation facilitates greater contagion.
Finally, he urged to maintain proper hand hygiene, avoid contact with people who have flu symptoms, apply the influenza vaccine, improve eating habits and cover the mouth when sneezing or coughing.
