What is intermittent fasting?
Intermittent fasting is a "method" that is gaining popularity among women every day, as they say it is an effective way to lose weight . We explain what intermittent fasting is and how it works.
According to the Mayo Clinic, regular fasting can lower "bad" cholesterol and improve how the body metabolizes sugar, which can be good for preventing weight gain and reducing risk factors for diabetes and heart disease.
This is because people who resort to constant fasting are believed to have greater self-control in the way they eat, drink and their calorie intake, which means they may have more control over their weight.
Now , intermittent fasting is different types of fasting:
Intermittent fasting one: consume few calories for a few days and then eat normally.
Intermittent fasting two: eat only at certain times, skip some meals or go 12-14 hour intervals without food or drink.
A publication of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition , mentions that after reviewing the research studies related to intermittent fasting , it has shown an improvement in weight, cholesterol and diabetes , however, more research must be done.
This intermittent fasting has been an "easy" method for many women who want to lose weight without undergoing extreme diets, however there are factors related to fasting that we must take into account, as it is not recommended for all types of people. These are the side effects of fasting:
- If you are a person who has presented eating disorders, this method to lose weight is not recommended for you, as this could cause you to have an episode of binge eating.
- If you are used to exercising a lot, it is also not a recommended method for you, since exercising on an empty stomach could cause dizziness or episodes of hypoglycemia.
- If you have diabetes, you should not fast, as this could affect your health with an episode of intense hypoglycemia , because due to the medications and the body without food, the blood sugar would drop too low.
Now that you know what intermittent fasting is all about and you want to experience it, it is important to consult your doctor if it is a suitable alternative for you and your lifestyle.
