5 tips for a healthy pregnancy

In general, when talking about pregnancy care , the biggest concern is those things related to food , the intake of required medications , as well as physical and  emotional health .

However, slightly more general issues tend to escape the most usual information; those recommendations that have to do with daily life , activities and challenges that are encountered at home and in the environment .

Therefore, we give you these tips, to complement medical care and achieve a happy and healthy pregnancy :

1. Wear comfortable clothes, avoiding those that, due to compression, prevent or hinder blood circulation in the legs or abdomen and the movements of the fetus . Take special care with stockings and socks, which do not have compressive elastic bands. Wear low, comfortable shoes to avoid falls.

2. Direct sun exposure should be avoided , due to the possibility of producing or aggravating facial pigmentation that occurs in pregnant women ( chloasma gravidarum ). However, indirect sunlight (under umbrellas, etc.) is very suitable for fetal development .

3. Travel is not contraindicated during pregnancy , as long as precautions are taken. It is not advisable to carry them out in places with few health services. Check what vaccines and preventive treatments you require, well in advance. Towards the end of pregnancy , avoid long trips .

4. Whenever you travel by car , use your seat belt . Wear it as usual, except for the lower strap, which should be placed on the lower part of your belly, below your abdomen. The belt should not be worn around the abdomen, as it can cause serious injury in the event of an accident .

5. Try not to be in constant contact with animals (especially cats and rodents ), because they can be transmitters of certain diseases that carry a risk during pregnancy , such as toxoplasmosis . If you come into contact with them, carefully wash your hands. For the same reason, avoid the consumption of liver and raw or undercooked meats .

Remember that you can continue doing your usual work , although it will depend on the type of activity and your previous state of health . Try to perform tasks in which you do not have excessive physical or mental fatigue , although it is a personal decision, always guided by your doctor.
