A study links poor nutrition with mental health
If you abuse junk food or don't take care of your diet, be careful, your mental health is at stake.
We already knew that a poor dietcan cause cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anemia, and even sleep apnea, but now, thanks to a study by Jim E. Banta of the Loma Linda University School of Public Health in California , it appears which also affects our mental health. Regardless of age, gender, education, marital status, or income level.
The work, recently published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, concluded that adults who abused junk food and had a poor diet showed more symptoms of psychological distress than the rest.
And he placed special emphasis on the excessive consumption of sugar, associated with bipolar disorder, and that of fried and processed foods, with depression. "We need more conclusive studies, but everything points out that poor food affects our mental health. That is still early to establish a rigorous cause-effect relationship," Jim defends.
With California as the setting, the report also concluded that almost 17 percent of adults could suffer from a mental illness: 13.3 in a moderate way and 3.7 in a severe way.
