Exercise-induced asthma
What is exercise-induced asthma? What are the symptoms ? How to prevent stress-induced seizures? What are the treatments ? The answers.
What is exercise-induced asthma?
When an asthma attack is triggered during physical exercise or only a few minutes later , it is called exercise -induced asthma (or exercise-induced asthma). Indeed, during physical exercise, certain factors cause the bronchi to contract, which can lead to a crisis.
Note: you may very well have asthma and not have exercise-induced asthma . Also, be aware that these crises do not necessarily occur every time you play sports.
Symptoms of exercise-induced asthma
Symptoms vary from person to person :
- Respiratory discomfort (the passage of air is difficult, breathing becomes difficult)
- Dry cough
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Feeling of tightness in the chest
Exercise-induced asthma may be the first sign of asthma for someone who has never had a real attack. If these disorders appear, consider consulting your doctor because the earlier a treatment is taken , the more effective it is.
Diagnosing exercise-induced asthma
The diagnosis of exercise-induced asthma is based on:
- Doctor's clinical examination
- Pulmonary function tests (EFR).
Factors favoring exercise-induced asthma
When you exercise, the muscles need more oxygen. To do this, your breathing speeds up and you breathe through your mouth . But, a cold and dry air which arrives directly in the bronchi , can cause their contraction and thus the attack of asthma.
In addition, breathing through the mouth does not filter the air that contains allergic factors (such as pollen) or irritants (such as pollution particles) . Arriving in the bronchi, they promote the occurrence of a crisis.
Thus, exercise-induced asthma is favored by:
- Cold and dry air
- Air pollution or pollens (if you are sensitive to it)
- A very long or very intense effort
- Poorly controlled asthma .
How to prevent exercise-induced asthma?
To prevent exercise-induced asthma, certain habits are good to adopt:
- Respect the warm-up time
- Breathe through your nose (this warms the air and filters it)
- Adapt the intensity of your effort
- Hydrate regularly
- Gradually stop physical activity
- Avoid sport in periods of heavy pollution, pollen or dry cold
- Have your fast-acting bronchodilator with you (in your pocket or sports bag).
To limit the risk of an exercise-induced asthma attack , your doctor may also advise you to take a puff or two of your asthma treatment about 10 to 15 minutes before your workout .
Practicing sport while being asthmatic, is it possible?
Contrary to popular belief, reconciling sport and asthma is quite possible. Indeed, if the asthma is well controlled , no sport is contraindicated . Scuba diving with bottles is now possible (in case of non-severe and well-controlled asthma) with a certificate issued by a doctor from the French Federation for Underwater Studies and Sports.
Sport, whether recreational or competitive, is highly recommended for people with asthma or exercise-induced asthma . It helps strengthen the heart, exercise tolerance and breath, which helps improve asthma control .
