Diabetic Discomfort: What Are the Signs and How to React?
Diabetes is a disease in which the body fails to regulate the concentration of sugar in the blood. Diabetics whose pancreas (which normally secretes insulin) is diseased, are unable to regulate their sugar levels, and are obliged to regularly inject quantities of insulin that replace the natural secretion of our body.
Diabetic illness: what are the causes?
The most frequent accidents in diabetics are: hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
Hyperglycemia
It is a high level of sugar in the blood , which often corresponds to the episode of discovery of diabetes, but which can also occur in the event of excess of table, in a diabetic treated, or following the poor treatment follow-up.
Hypoglycemia
This is a decrease in the level of sugar in the blood which can occur in a treated diabetic who has made a mistake in his doses of insulin or who has not eaten enough.
What are the symptoms ?
Symptoms of Hyperglycemia
- The patient says he has diabetes;
- He presents ample and difficult breathing ;
- His pulse is generally rapid ;
- His breath has a discreet smell of acetone (smell close to that of nail polish);
- He is thirsty and urinates frequently .
Symptoms of hypoglycemia
The victim feels weak, sweats, looks pale . Sometimes she has behavioral problems (disorientation, aggressiveness, etc.), which can suggest a state of psychiatric agitation.
How to react ?
In case of hyperglycemia
This is to correct high blood sugar by quickly injecting insulin . You have to eat normally, perform blood and/or urine tests every 4 hours, even at night. Do not play sports or fall asleep as long as there is acetone in the urine, because then there is a risk of ketosis.
In case of hypoglycemia
Systematically think about it in front of any diabetic treated. More often than not, diabetics are prepared for such incidents , and correct themselves by taking sugar .
If victim cannot support themselves but is conscious:
- Help her sit or lie down;
- Give him a sugary drink .
If the discomfort stops, let her rest and advise her to see her doctor. If the discomfort continues , reassure the victim and ask him:
- What is its treatment? Is this the first episode of this type?
- Since when did this discomfort appear?
If necessary, call her doctor with her. Caution, never try to feed an unconscious person .
Prevent diabetic discomfort
For the record, hypoglycaemia can occur after physical effort on an empty stomach, without any diabetic disorder, in this case it is necessary to absorb sugar or a sweet food. The best prevention is of course to absorb slow sugars and fast sugars before any physical effort .
For diabetics, regular monitoring by their attending physician is essential. A good observance of his treatments is essential (insulin injections, taking oral antidiabetics...).
It is also recommended to always have something to supply your body with sugar at hand (lump of sugar, soda, fruit juice, etc.).
Also wear an identification that mentions your diabetes, in case of discomfort, the people around you will know more easily how to react and inform the emergency services.
